Sigma Lambda Beta is a Historically Latino Social Fraternity which promotes brotherhood, scholarship, leadership, service, and cultural awareness. The Fraternity motto:

"Opportunity for Wisdom, Wisdom for Culture"

sums up our devotion to our college studies, while using our opportunity to positively influence our culture.

FOUNDING PRINCIPLES

Our eighteen founding fathers created this honorable fraternity with four main founding principles, Brotherhood, Scholarship, Community Service and Cultural Awareness. Through all of our activities we strive to promote these principles.

B R O T H E R HO O D
It is our strong brotherhood that sets us apart from the rest. We have weekly socials on campus and it isn't rare to see us traveling to visit Brothers from all over the country. The support network we provide for each other and the rest of the community through our strong Brotherhood is truly impressive. As Latinos having family around is important, especially while away at school, and as Brothers we provide that family for each other.

S C H O L A R S H I P
Getting a college degree is why we are all in school, and that is a goal we all work hard to achieve. We stress study hours and the need to maintain a high GPA. For the past two years we have received the Highest New Member GPA Award from the Interfraternity Council. Striving to be the best academically is a group project for the Betas. As a fraternity we have a better retention and graduation rate than other Latino Students.

S E R V I C E
We believe in giving back to our community and helping those not as fortunate as ourselves. Some of the places we have volunteered are the Hispanic American Council, Minority Visitation Days on campus, Bronson Hospital, Adelante Alternative High School and many other local charities. We also involve ourselves with special service projects through the university and other groups, if you have a good service project, let us know, we would love to hear about it.

C U L T U R A L .... A W A R E N E S S
Disseminating our rich culture and breaking down negative stereotypes are some of our main goals. We hold events on campus to discuss issues facing Latinos. We have sponsored events on the struggles of Latino women, Puerto Rican Independence, and minority college recruitment. Increasing tolerance for the views of other is very important to us, and we take it very seriously.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

One of our main goals is to develop Latino leaders for tomorrow. Many of our Brothers hold high positions around campus. We strive to train and place our Brothers into position in which they can be influential for Latino/Minority affairs here at Western Michigan. We do this through experience and contact with other organizations, sending Brothers to conferences, and with the Collegiate Leadership and Development Program.

CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT
Currently we have Brothers in the Minority Student Leadership Council (MSLC), Western Student Association (WSA), Presidential Student Advisory Committee (PSAC), Office Space Committee (OSC), Filipino Student Association (FSA), the Interfraternity Council (IFC), and the Hispanic Advisory Committee (HAC).

CONFERENCES
Over the last two years we have been able to send Brothers to many conferences. Through these conferences we learn leadership techniques and ways to be effective leaders in our personal and professional lives. Currently we have sent Brothers to I.M.P.A.C.T., United States Hispanic Leadership Conference, Midwest Hispanic Leadership Conference, LeaderShape, and will be sending a Brother to FuturesQuest.

COLLEGIATE LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENTPROGRAM
The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) sponsors a 6 week leadership program called the Collegiate Leadership and Development Program (CLDP). The CLDP is designed to create more effective and influential leaders at universities around the country. We are sponsored one of these programs here at Western, with support from the University President things went well.
