Historic Information

During the spring semester of 1986 Bro. Baltazar Mendoza-Madrigal began to explore the idea of a Latino based fraternity at the University of Iowa. After months of intensive research, Bro. Baltazar Mendoza-Madrigal called a special meeting on Monday, March 7, 1986 with some of the Latino students at the Chicano American Center. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the need and feasibility of creating a social Fraternity with an emphasis on Latino Culture. After that meeting the enthusiasm was so encouraging that word spread throughout the University. Then on Friday, April 4, 1986, the members finalized the philosophy of the organization. Hence, April 4, 1986, is the official founding date of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, Inc. at the University of Iowa. Everyone knew that this was the beginning of something special. The Eighteen Founding Fathers founded Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. with the following four principles in mind: Brotherhood, Scholarship, Cultural Awareness and Community Service Our founding Fathers had a dream of promoting scholastic achievements, eternal Brotherhood, the dissemination of our culture and service to our community. After over 15 years the fraternity can now be found at over fifty Universities and has ten strong Alumni Associations

Fraternity Principles

Our eighteen founding fathers created this honorable fraternity with four main founding principles, Brotherhood, Scholarship, Community Service and Cultural Awareness. Through all of our activities we strive to promote these principles.

Brotherhood
Brothers of Sigma Lambda Beta pride themselves in creating a family-oriented atmosphere at the campuses we are present at. This support network is one of the key aspects that make our organization so powerful.

Scholarship
Academic success and higher education are some of the main goals driving Sigma Lambda Beta. We have a high percentage of graduating members and post-bachelorate degrees.

Cultural Awareness
Emphasis is placed on making cultural awareness present on campus.

Community Service
Sigma Lambda Beta always strives to give back to the community. Each of our groups performs a minimum of 2 community services per semester but often we find ourselves performing more.
