During the last week of finals in the fall of 1995, Bro. Eduardo "Tex Mex" Cedillo discussed the idea of starting a chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., at Michigan State University with Bro. Abelardo "Ardiente" Rodriguez, and Bro. Luis "Balazo" Vazquez. Bro. Eduardo Cedillo felt that there should be a fraternity to represent the Latino population at Michigan State University. Bro. Eduardo Cedillo also felt there was a need for a Latino organization, which would be stronger than any student club or college student group. The Michigan State University Latino Community was suffering from numerous problems:
*Latino organizations were becoming less of a supportive resource for Latino student on campus.
*Latino organizations were falling apart due to personal conflicts among individual members
*Latino organizations were also becoming more and more isolated from the Latino college retention rate at Michigan State University.
On March 30th, 1996 Bro. Alfonso Salais called a special meeting to induct the first line of Associate Members of the prospective chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity Inc., at Michigan State University. The following students were inducted Bro. Eduardo Cedillo, Bro. Abelardo Rodriguez, and Bro. Luis Angel Vazquez. It was then decided that they would continue their enlightenment process in the fall of 1996, which was a lengthy process: 7 months, 3 weeks, 4 days, 2 hours, 2minutes, and 12 seconds to be exact. During the enlightenment process, Bro. Alfonso Salais, Bro. Esteban Tapia, Bro. Carlos Salais, Bro. Jose Olivarez, Bro. Rick Ramirez, Bro. Mark Tovar, and Bro. Miguel Centellas, all of whom were Members of Central Michigan University Rho Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., educated the new members on the requirements for membership. On November 24th, 1996 at 2:41:11am, Bro. Alfonso Salais initiated the new members at Central Michigan University and so it was determined that this date would berecognized as the founding date for the prospective chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., at Michigan State University. The Ship name of the founding line at MSU was established as "L.P.P.N.L.U" , with their line names: Bro. Eduardo "Tex Mex" Cedillo, Bro. Abelardo "Ardiente"Rodriguez, and Bro. Luis "Balazo" Vazquez.
The following week was a busy time in preparation for finals, so it was decided that they would pick up in the spring semester, when all necessary plans and organization had been taken care of. The first executive board was as follows: President- Bro. Eduardo Cedillo, Secretary- Bro. Luis Vazquez, and Treasurer/Membership Educator- Bro. Abelardo Rodriguez.Throughout the existence of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc at Michigan State University it will remain as the strongest Latino student organization on campus.
The Alpha Line
With the fall semester of 1996 passed, and the establishment of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity Inc., Michigan State University Colony, the recruitment of new members was the key and main focus for the Spring Semester. Bro. Abelardo Rodriguez was given the task of educating the Alpha line for the fraternity at MSU. Along with educating the first line for MSU, Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity Inc., had also taken the duty, along with Zeta Sigma Chi Sorority Inc., Delta Chapter to coordinate Latin Explosion, a Latino-based variety show that focused on the talents and skills of Latino students at Michigan State University. Through the recruitment efforts of the founding line at MSU, three associate members were inducted as potential brothers in the early weeks of the spring semester. Throughout the process of educating the Alpha class, two of the Associate members were not of gentlemanly quality, deciding to withdraw from the education process, leaving only one to emerge as a brother of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. On April 12th, 1997, at 4:09:16am, Bro. Leonard "Mexi-Rican" Savala III, Ship name "E.V.Q.C.S", was initiated into the brotherhood of Sigma Lambda Beta
The Beta Line
The fall semester of 1997 was one of great importance. Now that the fraternity had recruited its first class with the initiation of Bro. Leonard Savalla III, it was now time for the fraternity to look towards more growth and development. Bro. Luis Angel Vasquez was the Membership Educator for the Fall Semester of 1997. The semester would prove to be a fruitful year for the fraternity. Six gentlemen were recruited to become Associate Members, with the hopes of one day becoming brothers of the fraternity. Through the recruitment efforts of Bro. Eduardo Cedillo, Bro. Abelardo Rodriguez, Bro. Luis Vazquez, and Bro. Leonard Savala III, the Beta Line of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., Michigan State University colony was inducted. Six Associate members, the largest at MSU Colony's history, began their journey towards enlightenment. Through various road trips, community service events, and educational sessions, the Beta line gained much experience towards becoming brothers of the fraternity. On November 22nd, 1997, at 1:36:52 am, Bro. Adnoris "Boricua" Torres, Bro. Juan "Artista" Llanes, Bro. Rudy "Sueño" Serrato Jr., Bro. Robert "Chihuahua" Rivera II, Bro. Nicolas "Rico" Rodriguez, and Bro. Jesus "Chucho" Torres, ship name "L.A.U.C.S" were initiated into the fraternity. Bro. Adnoris Torres, was recruited through the Chicano/Latino Family Day event that was held through the office of Admissions were he met Bro. Eduardo Cedillo and Bro. Leonard Savala III. Bro. Juan Llanes and Jose Dejesus, who would one day in the spring semester begin the Associate Member Process , were recruited by Bro. Abelardo Rodriguez through a simple introduction in front of Shaw Hall. Bro. Rudy Serrato had been inspired by Bro. Dennis Medel from Eastern Michigan University and Bro. Robert Rivera had primarily been recruited by the founding brothers at Michigan State University. Bro Nicolas Rodriguez was recruited through Bro. Eduardo Cedillo while being involved with the Latino Men’s Club. Bro. Jesus Torres, was introduced to the fraternity through Bro. Alfonso Salais. A family friend, Bro. Alfonso had spoken of the fraternity while Bro. Jesus was still attending high school. In the Spring of 1998, the newly inducted members were quick to establish themselves on campus. It was a time for new recruitment, and to search for quality individuals to become a part of the colony. However, another fraternity was in the process of being established on campus, this would mean that competition for quality individuals was going to be increased.
The Gamma Line
The Gamma line of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., MSU colony was initiated in the month of February. Two Associate Members were inducted, their dean was Bro. Rudy "Sueno" Serrato Jr., number three of the Beta Line. Assuming the role of Membership Educator was a challenging and rewarding task. Road trips to various chapters during the education process, helping to establish the colonies by-laws, and establishing email addresses were some of the highlights that the associate members took part in. On April 18th, 1998 at 4:49:27am, at the University of Toledo, Epsilon Alpha Chapter, Bro. Jose "Corazon" Dejesus, and Bro. John "Guardian De La Isla" Hoffschneider, ship name "D.C.U.P.V" were initiated into the brotherhood. Bro. Jose Dejesus had been an interest since the Beta Line was going through the education process. Bro. John B. Hoffschneider, was the first Asian Pacific Islander American, to become a part of the MSU Colony, and was first introduced to the fraternity through Bro. Nicolas Rodriguez, who participated in the Michigan State University S.U.P.E.R 8 Program with him during the summer. Realizing the growth of the colony, it was decided not to take a class for the Fall semester of 1998.
The Delta Line
To develop and foster the leadership to be, the brothers had decided to wait until the spring. In the month of February, three Associate Members were initiated. It was the first class in a year, and founding Brother Abelardo "Ardiente" Rodriguez was to be the Membership Educator. It was during this time period, that MSU colony had earned chapter status. In March of 1999, MSU colony had been awarded Pi Alpha Chapter Status. At the same time, another fraternity was in the process of establishing themselves on campus. This would raise the level of competition, as on campus there would be three fraternities for individuals to choose from. Various road trips to Western Michigan, Grand Valley State University, University of Michigan, and University of Toledo were taken. The education process would prove to be too much for one associate member, leaving only two to complete the rest of the process. On April 17th, 1999 at 3:45:50am, at the University of Toledo, Epsilon Alpha Chapter, Bro. Nephtali "Mariachi" Gonzalez and Bro. Michael "La Fe" Barr, ship name "D.A.B.O.Y.S" Bro. Nephtali was introduced to the fraternity during the Latino Student reception, when his father had introduced him to Bro. Leonard Savla and Bro. Adnoris Torres. Bro. Michael Barr, had talked to Founding Bro. Eduardo about the becoming a part of the fraternity. With the success of this line, the chapter had gained two more valuable members, and of the new members, Bro. Michael Barr, was the first Caucasian/Non-Hispanic/Latino Brother of the chapter.
The Epsilon Line
With the Delta line of the chapter initiated, a time of transition was in store for the chapter. During the time period of development, it would be a full year until the next line of brothers were to emerge. Bro. Adnoris Torres, was chosen to become the Membership Educator for this line. The potential Epsilon line was originally comprised of five individuals that the chapter had deemed a high potential for having the characteristics of a true Sigma Lambda Beta man, however, of the five, only three were able to complete the process. The education process was one riddled with success and failure, just with the previous lines, through road trips, educational sessions, even through a car accident, the Epsilon line's determination was their drive towards completing the educational process. On November 18th, 2000 at 4:15:23am, at the University of Toledo, Epsilon Alpha Chapter, Bro.Robert "Alma Valiente" Alcantar, Bro. Jason "Curandero" Barrios, and Bro. Francisco "El Tarasco" Romero, ship name "T.R.I.N.I.D.A.D" was initiated into the brotherhood. Bro. Robert Alcantar and Bro. Francisco Romero had long been friends growing up in the Southwest district of Detroit, deciding to set their foundation with the university first, they both did not become a part of the chapter until their Junior year. Bro. Jason Barrios, was approached by Bro. John Hoffschneider about the fraternity through mutual friends, during a study session they had discussed the idea of a brotherhood and what a fraternity was, is, and should be. Notably, Bro. Jason Barrios was the first Filipino-American, and the 2nd Asian/Pacific American to become a part of the Chapter.
The Zeta Line
With the addition of three new brothers, the chapter was well prepared to handle the recruitment of more individuals. On the contrary, it was the direct opposite. It would be another year before chapter would take on another class. Through the recruitment efforts during the summer, and throughout previous years, this year would prove to be prosperous recruitment wise. The Zeta line of Pi Alpha chapter would primarily compose of four individuals. Bro. Michael Barr, had been given the responsibility for educating this line of potential brothers. Just as with any line, there are those that have the desire and determination to make it through the education process. Of the four that had initially started the process, only two were able to come through in the end. On December 1st, 2001 at 3:45:10am, at the resteraunt formerly known as Ramon's, Bro. Deigo "Destino" Romero, and Bro. William "Orgulloso" Escalante, ship name "A.C.V.M.N.T.M.P.E.C", were initiated into the brotherhood. Bro. Diego Romero had long been a supporter of the chapter since his freshman year at Michigan State University. Bro. Abelardo Rodriguez along with several other brothers had developed close bonds with him prior to his decision to undertake the education process. Bro. William Escalante, had been interested in fraternities during his visit to MSU for Chicano/Latino Family day. Meeting several of the brothers during the event and keeping in contact with some of them during his first few weeks of his freshman year, Bro. William made the decision to begin his education process his first semester of his freshman year. An interesting note about this line, was that both brothers had come from states outside of Michigan: Maryland and Wisconsin.
The Eta Line
In the spring of 2003, Bro. Diego "Destino" Romero was honored with the duty of instructing the Eta Line of the Pi Alpha Chapter. Within one year of being inducted into the chapter brother Diego was quick to take a leadership position and begin work for the betterment of the chapter. Various brothers had worked hard on recruiting men of quality to become a part of the fraternity, and through that hard work, four gentlemen were chosen to participate in the Educational Process. These gentlemen had showen their potential to the brothers as men of virtue, and in turn would be given the honor of being educated into the fraternity. On February 3rd, 2003 at 12:11:23 a.m., these men were inducted as associate members of the fraternity. Throughout the Educational Process, these gentlemen had shown their potential to the brothers, and continued towards the path of brotherhood. It was not until 1:48:37 a.m., on April 3, 2003 that these gentlemen would be welsomed into the fraternity: Bro. J.P. "Espiritu Fuerte" Sarmiento, Bro. Jusitn "Justificado" Culajara, Bro. Florencio "Deseo Poderoso" Hernandez, Bro. Louie "Pensador" Lainez, ship name: C.D.P.N. Bro. J.P. Sarmiento, and Bro. Justin Romero had long known Bro. Jason barrios along with other brother within the chapter and they had both felt tha the fraternity was an organization of distinction and a family. Bro. Florensio Hernandez, an Eastern High School Alumnus, from Lansing, MI, had inquired about the fraternity from Bro. William Escalante. Deciding to take a semester to himself to do his own research Bro. Florensio had made the decision to become a part of the fraternity the following semester. Bro. Louie Lainez had knowing about the fraternity through various instances of exposure and through various people as well as brothers. After taking much time to reflect, Bro. Louie made the decision to become a part of the chapter after the fall semester. This most recent line had shown much diversity within the chapter, being primarily Filipino-american decent, Bro. Florensio was the only Chicano/Latino Associate Member. However, that did not stop the bond of brotherhood to develop amongst these students. These brothers had also assumed leadership position with organizations and communities outside of the fraternity, showing all that the fraternity was an organization of leaders.
The Theta Line
Within the chapter attaining the four new members in the Spring semester of 2003 the following semester would yield the same rewards. With the new members in place, the rectruitment initiative was well underway for the chapter. Bro. Robert "Alma Valiente" Alcantar had been nominated to receive the honor of educating the potential "Theta" line of Pi Alpha Chapter and he took charge of the postion with great commitment and pride. On September 24th, 2003 four men accepted the bid to walk the path of brotherhood with Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., Pi Alpha Chapter. Throughout the Educational Process, these gentlemen had shown great persitence and focus. Overcoming obstacles that were placed before them, and times of dismay, they becamed a unified process they had shown their potential as quility brother, just as current brothers had shown during their Educational Process. On December 6th, 2003 at 4:31:45 a.m., Bro. Oscar "Exigente" García Coron, Bro. Sergio "Afortunado" Espinoza, Bro. Ricardo "Carismatico"' Leon, and Bro. Marc "Renacimiento" Johnston, Ship name M.A.H.A.L., were initiated into the brotherhood of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., Pi Alpha Chapter. Bro. Oscar and Bro. Sergio had known about the fraternity prior to their educational process. throughout the journey Bro. Oscar had an unfortunate family loss, and through the support of his line brothers, was able to cope. Bro. Sergio being hypo-glycemic was bale to overcome his condition and complete the processeven during times of difficulty. Bro. Ricardo Leon was a mentee of Bro. Jose Cabrales, Psi Alpha Chapter Alumnus, and had spoken about the Fraternity; he is also the first openly gay brother at Pi Alpha Chapter. Bro. Marc Johnston had known the brothers prior through his involvement wiht the Asian American community. Bro. John B. Hoffschneider was to various types of student groups. Bro. Marc became interested in the fraternity his freshman year. He had also taken part in the Education Process earlier in his undergraduate years, but had withdrawn, only to return with renewed vigor to complete an unfinished task.
