Jack-o’-lanterns during Halloween

As Halloween quickly approaches, you will start to notice more and more jack-o’-lanterns appear. With their funny, comical, and some even spooky appearance, have you ever wondered what’s the story behind them?

Jack-o’-lanterns, or at least some form of them, can be traced back 10,000 years when the first gourds were domesticated.  It is believed that several earlier civilizations, such as the Maori people, would carve lanterns out of gourds!

The carving of pumpkins, or even turnips, as a Halloween tradition is believed to have originated in Ireland. Initially, Halloween was celebrated throughout the Celtic regions as the festival of Samhain – a festival which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or “darker half” of the year. During this time, it was believed that supernatural beings and the souls of the dead would roam the Earth. The lanterns were said to represent various supernatural beings and were used to ward off evil spirits. Over the years, this tradition has become more festive and decorative.

As you look for ways to celebrate Halloween and show off your SLB pride, feel free to print out the stencil below.  Remember, culture is not a costume!  Have a safe, and spooky Halloween! [gview file=”http://sigmalambdabeta.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/SLB-Pumpkin-Template.pdf”]
