Hands-Only CPR Awareness

During Betacon 2018 the House of Delegates of Sigma Lambda Beta passed a resolution that entities of the fraternity show a short CPR awareness video during informational and open house events. The fraternity’s Executive Board of Directors felt strongly about this resolution and decided to begin the process of creating a video that our entities can utilize. Today we release that video in conjunction with Victor Correa CPR Awareness Day that is annually recognized on November 20th.

This year marks the 27th Anniversary of the first Sigma Lambda Beta man’s entrance into Omega Chapter. On this day, we remember Brother Victor Correa’s passing and encourage everyone to become aware of how to perform hands-only CPR so that future tragedies like his can be avoided.

Victor Correa Ortiz was a mechanical engineering student at Stony Brook University in New York. In his freshman year, Correa went back to Puerto Rico to visit his family. During his visit, while wading off the shores of Puerto Rico he drowned and passed away. Bystanders were not informed on how to administer CPR at the time to possibly save his life.

Victor Correa was a newly initiated brother of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. Every November, the brothers of Sigma Lambda Beta host events to encouraging certification in CPR as well as provide opportunities for members of their communities to be certified in CPR. Victor Correa CPR Awareness Day is officially held on November 20th, the same day that Brother Victor “Ziggy” Correa was initiated.
