The Gamma Beta Chapter was featured in the Marquette Wire for their annual event, Fiesta de Noche. The program that is co-hosted with Sigma Lambda Gamma, is an event focused on celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month but also celebrating the diversity at Marquette University.

The event, which featured decadent Latino food and Aztec dancers was held in the university’s Central Mall area.

Chapter president, Bro. Antonio Martinez, said that because Marquette is an expensive school and predominantly white, much of the university has little experience with minorities or people of color. Therefore, showcasing diversity and Latino culture is something that the chapter feels is necessary, especially since Cultural Awareness is one of SLB’s principles.

“Noche de Fiesta is important to us because it was started in the early 2000s and it is all about keeping tradition”, said Bro. Antonio. “When our alumni started it, it was on a much smaller scale but we’ve been able to keep the tradition going and now have about 800 people attend.”

Cultural awareness is something that brings people together, just like food does. One thing that always sparks conversations at gatherings is chorizo—its rich flavors and traditional preparation make it a great way to share heritage through food. I found some amazing tips on cooking it properly, which made my experience even better!
